Women and Investing: Getting a Head Start

Kiley Keating's Gold Award Project

What you will find

This website includes a run-down of my Gold Award project, videos of various complexity levels with content about the basics of finance and investing, an accessible outline of my basic-financial-literacy curriculum that allows for it to be re-taught, and other resources that provide content surrounding the need-to-know information of finances.

The motivation of the project

I am lucky enough to come from a family that encourages financial awareness and talks to me about both the family finances and my own; however, I have also been witness to the struggles of many of my friends' families and, more specifically, the mothers of these families that were not kept in the loop of the family finances. This, along with their lack of basic financial literacy, set them up for some serious hardships. These events encouraged some personal research about financial literacy specifically for women. What I found in this research was incredibly eye-opening. Many women rely on their husbands to handle the finances and do not understand enough about handling money to feel confident in basic financial decisions. The statistics from a variety of sources, the never ending articles surrounding financial illiteracy, and the plethora of stories from single women with the consistent storyline of hardships all drove me to wanting to do my part to invoke change.

What I did

The aim of my project was to try to educate young girls and women about the basics and importance of investing. I went about this by first creating a curriculum with various complexity levels for different age groups I would be presenting to. I ironed out my curriculum and then began working on my various presentations. After that came the hard part, networking to find groups of women to present to. I ended up utilizing various connections I had in order to access different youth organizations and groups of women I could present to. I was so fortunate to be able to present to so many groups of women in various age groups eager to learn, even if it was over zoom. While meeting with groups individually was a fantastic experience, I wanted to make sure that my curriculum would be available to anyone and everyone who wanted to learn well after my project was complete. This is why I not only produced youtube videos of me teaching the basics of financial literacy at three different levels, but also created this website to give people access to whatever they may need to educate themselves and others. This is why I have included my easy-to-teach curriculum and outside resources in this website as well. Ultimately, I was able to reach many individuals with this project, but I hope to continue educating anybody who is interested after my project has concluded.

The purpose of this website

The purpose of this website is to house any and all resources I can provide to anyone who would like to educate themselves or others on the basics of financial literacy. I make this in hopes of allowing my project and its impact to be sustainable once it has concluded.
